WASHINGTON, DC – On Thursday, March 21, the United Nations took a significant stride in the global AI landscape by unanimously adopting a landmark resolution on AI and AI safety. Jason Green-Lowe, Executive Director of the Center for AI Policy (CAIP), a nonpartisan research organization that develops policy and conducts advocacy to mitigate catastrophic risks from AI, released the following statement:

"In a landmark move, the United Nations unanimously adopted a resolution promoting artificial intelligence's safe and trustworthy development, signaling broad international agreement on the need to manage AI technology.

"The Center for AI Policy applauds the United Nations (UN) for approving a resolution to promote artificial intelligence's safe and trustworthy development. This resolution represents one of the most expansive efforts to date to reach international alignment on emerging AI technology.

"This broad UN agreement aligns with recent international AI agreements like the Bletchley Declaration, which outlined steps to reduce the existential risks of AI technology and promote international cooperation on research. The UN resolution calls on all Member States, including the US, to promote safety by "developing regulatory and governance approaches and frameworks related to AI systems." As a leading advocate, the Center for AI Policy aims to complement this UN effort by advancing specific and enforceable AI safety policies and encouraging Congress to codify them into US legislation."
