On the 4th of September, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, Department of Commerce released a request for comment on Bolstering Data Center Growth, Resilience, and Security.

The Center for AI Policy provided responses to Question 3 and Question 9, which ask about the potential societal impacts of data center investment as well as the security considerations for data centers running or training frontier AI models. 

In response to these questions, we provided the following policy proposals: 

  1. Coordinated approach to limit electricity price rises
  2. “Know Your Customer” requirements on data centers with cutting-edge semiconductors
  3. Security protocols on data centers with cutting-edge semiconductors
